Preston Guild Wheel Ride

The Preston Guild Wheel is a 21 mile 'Greenway', walking and cycling route, that encircles the city of Preston, linking the city to the countryside.

Built by Lancashire County Council with support from Preston City Council the route was officially opened as part of the 2012 Preston Guild.

Our club ride on 21 April 2013 cycled over from our meeting point at Read via Whalley and York to meet the Guild Wheel at the Tickled Trout Hotel.

We then headed in a clockwise direction along the side of the river Ribble to the cafe in Avenham Park where we stopped for lunch.

Continuing on the Guild Wheel we passed through the dock area, before crossing the A6 and M6, and going through the Brockholes Nature Reserve and back to the Tickled Trout Hotel to complete our circuit. We then made our way back home.

Blackpool Illuminations 2012

On Tuesday evening 28th August 2012. a special 'Ride the Lights' event was held in association with Blackpool Tourist Board and Sky Rides. The whole of the sea front road is closed to all traffic except cycles from 7:00pm until 10:00pm giving cyclists a sneak preview of the illuminations prior to the official turn on the following weekend.

The ride has become an annual event, with riders of all ages, many in fancy dress or on decorated bikes. This year the Granada TV report the following day estimated that over 12000 cyclists had taken part. By John Ramsden.

Blackpool Illuminations 2011

On Tuesday evening 30th August 2011, a special 'Ride the Lights' event was held in association with Blackpool Tourist Board and Sky Rides. The sea front road was closed to all traffic except cycles from 7:00pm to 10:00pm to give cyclists a preview of this years illuminations, before the big switch on at the weekend.

Ten of our club members met up to ride the event together, and spotted several other local cyclists including riders from Pendle Chopper Club and Cycle Sport Pendle. We have not seen any figures yet for the numbers of people taking part this year, but in previous years it has been estimated that there has been over 8000 participants.

It is certainly a very different cycling experience, and good to see so many people of all ages taking part on a wide range of cycles. There were many families with very young children participating and lots of people were wearing fancy dress or had decorated their bikes. By John Ramsden.
